About Specola
Specola is commercial desktop networking software provided under the Specola sole-proprietor brand. It is a client application, not a hosted VPN service. We do not operate the proxy servers, DNS resolvers, subscriptions, or other network services that you configure in the application.
Data we handle
Website data
Our public website is static and does not intentionally use advertising cookies, behavioral analytics, or cross-site tracking. Our hosting provider may process ordinary server logs such as IP address, request time, requested URL, user agent, and security events to deliver and protect the site.
Purchase and order data
Purchases are processed by Paddle, our Merchant of Record and authorized reseller. Paddle may collect your name, email address, billing address, country, tax information, payment details, and other information required to process the transaction, prevent fraud, provide receipts, and meet legal obligations. We do not receive your full payment-card details.
Paddle may provide order and customer information needed to deliver licenses, confirm entitlement, provide support, prevent abuse, and administer refunds. Paddle processes data under its own Privacy Policy.
License and activation data
Specola can create a device identifier for license binding. If you use online activation, the application may send that identifier with the account name or other activation information you provide. We use it to issue and validate a license, prevent unauthorized sharing, restore purchases, and provide support.
License keys, activation state, configuration, and application logs may be stored locally on your device. Offline activation does not require the application to send an activation request to us.
Support data
When you contact support, we receive the information you choose to send, such as your name, email, order reference, device and operating-system details, diagnostics, configuration excerpts, and request contents. Remove proxy credentials, private keys, passwords, access tokens, and unrelated browsing information before sharing diagnostics.
Network data processed locally
To provide its core functionality, Specola processes network destinations, DNS queries, routing decisions, process information, connection metadata, and traffic counters on your device. This data is used locally for routing, diagnostics, and display. Specola does not intentionally transmit it to us unless you choose to submit it for support or configure a third-party service that receives it.
Your chosen proxy servers, DNS resolvers, subscription providers, update sources, STUN servers, and other integrations receive the data required to perform their functions. Their handling of data is governed by their policies and your configuration.
Why we use personal data
We use personal data to:
- deliver and protect the website;
- process orders, issue licenses, and confirm entitlement;
- activate, validate, maintain, and restore licenses;
- provide technical and customer support;
- investigate fraud, security incidents, and violations of our Terms;
- comply with tax, accounting, consumer-protection, sanctions, and other legal obligations; and
- improve reliability using feedback and diagnostics you voluntarily provide.
Depending on the jurisdiction, we rely on performance of a contract, legitimate interests, legal obligations, or consent. We do not sell personal data or use it for third-party behavioral advertising.
Sharing
We may share the minimum necessary data with Paddle for checkout, tax, fraud prevention, order support, and refunds; with hosting, email, license-delivery, security, and support providers acting for us; with professional advisers and authorities when reasonably required by law; or with a successor in a merger, acquisition, restructuring, or sale subject to appropriate safeguards. We do not authorize service providers to use personal data for their own advertising.
Retention and security
We retain order, license, and tax records for the period required to provide the product, resolve disputes, prevent fraud, and comply with law. Support records are retained only as long as reasonably needed for the request and related security or legal needs. Local application data remains on your device until you remove it, subject to operating-system backups.
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards, but no system or transmission method is completely secure. You are responsible for protecting your device, license key, proxy credentials, and configuration backups.
International transfers
Our providers may process data in countries other than your own. Where required, appropriate legal mechanisms and safeguards are used for international transfers. Paddle describes its processing and transfer practices in its privacy documentation.
Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or objection, and to withdraw consent. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority. Some information must be retained for legal, security, fraud-prevention, or transaction-record obligations.
For payment information controlled by Paddle, use Paddle's buyer support and privacy channels. For data controlled by Specola, contact us below.
Children
Specola is not directed to children under 16, and purchases must be made by an adult capable of entering a contract. We do not knowingly collect children's personal data.
Changes
We may update this Policy when our product, providers, or legal obligations change. We will publish the updated version here and revise the effective date. Material changes may also be communicated through the product or order email where appropriate.
